Humble Beginnings

Tung Shin Hospital has been a witness to the development of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian society. The growth of the hospital in many ways is likened to that of Kuala Lumpur.

Tung Shin Hospital was founded by the last Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur in 1881 while Kuala Lumpur was still a mere village. It was initially set up as a modest clinic named Pooi Shin Thong, to provide primarily free traditional Chinese medical treatments to the poor and needy. It was officiated as Tung Shin Hospital on 23 November 1895 to cater for the increasing demand of medical care services during the tin mining industry boom in Kuala Lumpur.

Becoming a leading non-profit hospital takes more than medical expertise and technology. We continue to strive to deliver exceptional care to help create a lifetime of good health for everyone in Malaysia.
It stays true to our past, encompasses the present and outlines the future.

Founded with A Heart of Generosity & Compassion

Tung Shin Hospital, formerly known as Pooi Shin Tong was founded by Kapitan China Yap Kwan Seng to provide medical care and even funeral assistance to the needy using his own fund. Pooi Shin Tong, which was believed to be located at a shop lot in Petaling Street, was started as a clinic with medical care by two Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners.
