Historic Haw Par Building with Recognition

As the name denotes, it was donated by the famous Singaporean brothers, Mr Aw Boon Haw ESQ and Mr Aw Boon Par ESQ who were known as the founders of Tiger Balm and Sin Chew Jit Poh.

1942

The War Years

The development of Tung Shin Hospital was partially halted by the occupation of the Japanese army. For more than three years, the hospital building was occupied for military use which caused the medical services of the hospital to stop completely.

1881

Founded with A Heart of Generosity & Compassion

Tung Shin Hospital, formerly known as Pooi Shin Tong was founded by Kapitan China Yap Kwan Seng to provide medical care and even funeral assistance to the needy using his own fund. Pooi Shin Tong, which was believed to be located at a shop lot in Petaling Street, was started as a clinic with medical care by two Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners.

1890

Turning into A Community Hospital

With the rapid growth of Kuala Lumpur population and its neighbouring area following the development of mining industry, commerce and infrastructure, the needs of medical care escalated. Kapitan Yap then decided to turn Pooi Shin Tong into a community hospital with the hope to pool resources to improve its services forto the community after a discussion with Chinese Merchant Loke Yew. The proposal of this reorganisation was initiated by another merchant Chow Ah Yok who unfortunately passed away before it was materialised.

1895

Grand Opening of Tung Shin Hospital

With the warm support of contemporary community leaders, Tung Shin Hospital with two newly built wards at its current location officially opened by Mrs. JP Rodger, the wife of then acting British Resident to Selangor on November 22. Bullock carts were used as ambulances to carry patients from the tin mines to the hospital for treatments.

1917

Development of Buildings

Ward One was the brainchild of Mr Cheong Yoke Choy. His initial donation also brought in subsequent contributions from multiple Chinese merchants which led to the completion of Ward One in October, 1917. Ward One was also one of the three major historical buildings in the first half of the 20th century. However, there is no definite answer for its location, outlook and whereabouts.

Opening of Loke Yim Female Ward

Loke Yim Female Ward was rebuilt from a single storey ward with the contribution from an established miner and banker in Kuala Lumpur, Mr Liew Weng Chi. The ward was then completed and launched in 1934 in remembrance of Mr Liew’s mother, the late Madam Loke Yim.
